Item Description & Information

A fine late 18th-century copperplate engraving depicting Centauro domato dal Genio di Bacco (Centaur tamed by the Genius of Bacchus), Plate IV from Tome I of the important series Illustrazioni de’ Monumenti scelti Borghesiani già esistenti nella Villa sul Pincio.

The plate vividly reproduces an expressive antique sculptural group from the celebrated collection of Prince Marcantonio IV Borghese at his Villa on the Pincio in Rome. It shows a powerful, rearing centaur with a playful winged putto (the Genius of Bacchus) riding on its back, one arm raised as if taming the creature. Engraved with superb neoclassical precision, it captures the dynamic movement, muscular anatomy, and mythological energy of the original marble.

This engraving belongs to the renowned 1821 publication (with plates executed circa 1792), which documented the finest antiquities in the Borghese Collection under the scholarly guidance of Ennio Quirino Visconti. It forms an excellent companion to the other plates from the same series, including Achille, Simulacro di Diana, and Gruppo di Mercurio e Vulcano.

Presented in a sophisticated dark frame with gilt slip and wide cream mount, this large-format print is ideal for a library, study, hallway, or classically inspired interior.
