Carington Bowles – "The Contemplative Charmer" and "The Studious Beauty" – Pair of English Georgian Mezzotints, 1778
Item Description & Information
A charming pair of late 18th-century English hand-coloured mezzotints respectively titled "The Contemplative Charmer" and "The Studious Beauty" published by Carrington Bowles, London (circa: 1770's).
Both prints depict fashionable young ladies in the height of 1770s dress. “The Contemplative Charmer” (engraved by John Raphael Smith) shows a beauty in a turban headdress seated pensively on a sofa, while “The Studious Beauty” portrays a young woman reading by a window, her elaborate hat and coquettish pose adding a playful touch.
These decorative mezzotints were hugely popular in Georgian drawing rooms and represent the elegant, light-hearted side of late 18th-century English printmaking.
