A late 19th-century, likely from the Meiji period (1868-1912) Japanese lacquered plum colour bookcase cabinet with gold decorations. The top with a pair of glazed doors enclosing two adjustable shelves sitting on a base with a single shelf.
The gold decoration here likely involves maki-e (蒔絵), which literally means "sprinkled picture." The Chinoiserie style scenes and motifs of exotic birds including cranes, water fowl and pheasants in watery landscapes.
