A Louis XVI cream painted canapé or settee by Jean-Baptiste-Claude Séne.
The padded arms, back and seat covered in silk and wool Beauvais tapestry woven depicting Ceres and the fruits of the seasons, on fluted tapering legs. Stamped 'I B SENE'.
Jean-Baptiste-Claude Séne was a French furniture maker in the 18th century and became a master in 1769. He came from a family of noted and skilled furniture craftsmen. In 1785, Jean-Baptiste-Claude received the title of fournisseur and made bergères, fauteuil, canapé, marquises and more for Royal Palaces including the Palace of Versailles and the Palace of Fontainebleau. His works were prominent in the private apartments of Marie-Antoinette.
