Item Description & Information

A Chinese (export) black-and-gilt lacquer cabinet-on-stand. Circa (18th Century).

The rectangular cabinet with panelled doors enclosing an architectural interior incorporating an arrangement of small hidden drawers, columns and latticework panels.  Decorated on the outside with gilt scenic landscapes of mountains and rivers within a scrolling foliate border all on a black background. 

The sides mounted with brass lifting handles on a conforming stand with scroll-carved frieze and straight legs with shaped feet. 

Similar examples of black-and-gilt, Chinoserie lacquer cabinets can be seen at Blickling Hall (Norfolk); Snowshill Manor (Gloucestershire); Dyrham House & Park (Gloucestershire) all of which are now under the National Trust.  

Measurements: 157 cm (H); 93 cm (W); 56.5 cm (D).
