After Jacques Barraband – A Set of 10 Limited Edition Reproduction Prints from Levaillant’s Histoire Naturelle des Perroquets
Item Description & Information
A fine decorative set of ten framed limited edition reproduction prints from the celebrated 1989 facsimile edition of François Levaillant’s Histoire Naturelle des Perroquets (1801–1805).
The reproductions were created and published by Brian Chester in association with Lord McAlpine of West Green, Sir David Attenborough, and Graeme Phipps, Curator of Birds at Taronga Zoo, Sydney. They were faithfully taken from the original hand-coloured engravings by Jacques Barraband (1767–1809) in Lord McAlpine’s personal collection.
The plates depict ten different species of parrots and parakeets with vibrant colouring and exceptional detail, including the Grey-headed Parrot, Blue-capped Parrot, Many-coloured Parakeet, Caique Parrot, Yellow-collared Lory, and Blue-faced Parakeet.
The plates depict ten different species with vibrant colouring and fine detail: the Grey-headed Parrot, Blue-capped Parrot, Many-coloured Parakeet, Caique Parrot, Yellow-collared Lory, and Blue-faced Parakeet. Each print is presented in a uniform gilt frame with cream mounts and includes the original French title.
While these are high-quality later reproductions (20th-century), they capture the beauty and precision of Barraband’s iconic ornithological work and form an attractive, colourful group.
