Item Description & Information

A pair of early Victorian painted composite material, or possibly finely molded plaster composition drop swags in the Neoclassical/Adam style, designed by Sir Charles Barry for the gallery at Harewood House.

Originally intended as architectural embellishments to add architectural interest and classical flair to the gallery at Harewood House. Exuding refined and elegant characteristic of the Neoclassical or Adam style. Each mounted on modern black backboards.

The upper section of each relief features a prominent, beautifully rendered scallop shell motif, a popular classical element symbolizing rebirth or prosperity. Above and to the sides of the shell, there are intricate scrollwork and acanthus-like foliage details. A subtle touch of gilt or gold accent is visible within the folds of the shell, adding a hint of luxury and highlighting its contours.

Cascading downwards from the shell is a long, lush, and highly detailed festoons or garlands of naturalistic elements. These include a profusion of meticulously sculpted flowers, delicate leaves, and what appear to be clusters of berries or small fruits all intricately intertwined to form a dense, organic swag. The realism and layering of these elements demonstrate significant craftsmanship.

Measurements: 112 cm (H); 30 cm (W).
