19th-century Regency Era Architect's Desk
Item Description & Information
A Regency period mahogany architect's desk (c. 1810–1830). A rare and highly functional piece of early 19th-century English furniture, designed for precision work such as drafting, drawing, or writing. Crafted from richly figured solid mahogany with a deep, warm patina that has developed beautifully over time, the desk combines elegant neoclassical lines with practical engineering—ideal for study, library, or home office settings in period-inspired or contemporary interiors.
The rectangular top features an adjustable, green leather-inset surface (original or early replacement leather with gold-tooled border), which can be tilted to various angles for comfortable drafting or reading. The top is framed by a moulded edge and supported by a sturdy frieze with three working drawers—two short drawers flanking a central deeper one—each fitted with original brass ring handles or knobs for easy access to tools, papers, or instruments.
Raised on elegant, turned and reeded legs (or square-section tapering legs in classic Regency style), the piece stands at a practical writing height with generous proportions that suit modern use without overwhelming smaller rooms.
Measurements: W: 91 cm x D: 61.5 cm x H: 72 cm
