18th-century Oak Gateleg Table
Item Description & Information
A versatile 18th-century English oak gateleg table. A charming piece of early Georgian vernacular furniture, blending rustic practicality with elegant simplicity. Handcrafted from solid oak with a deep, time-worn patina, this drop-leaf table exemplifies the classic gateleg design that dominated English homes.
The oval top, formed from wide, hand-sawn oak planks, extends generously when both leaves are raised, creating a comfortable surface. The leaves fold down smoothly on original brass hinges and rule joints, transforming the piece into a narrow console or side table ideal for hallways, against walls, or in smaller spaces. A single drawer to the frieze, fitted with an attractive brass backplate and swing handle (likely original or early), provides discreet storage for cutlery, napkins, or small items.
Supported by six turned legs—four fixed outer legs and two swinging gate legs—the base features characteristic baluster-and-ring turnings and sturdy stretchers forming a rectangular frame with mortise-and-tenon joinery. The legs taper gently to simple turned feet, and the gates swing out effortlessly to support the leaves, demonstrating the ingenious space-saving engineering of the era.
Measurements: 74 cm (H); 118 cm (D).
