Item Description & Information

A magnificent and rare Swedish painted sofa in the manner of the celebrated cabinetmaker Ephraim Ståhl. The sofa is dramatically adorned with carved seated griffin terminals on the arm supports — a powerful neoclassical motif symbolising strength and vigilance. It features a finely leaf-moulded seat frame raised on six elegant lotus-leaf clasped, baluster-turned, fluted tapering legs, with two central square splayed rear legs.

Of generous scale and exceptional presence, this sofa exemplifies the refined neoclassical elegance of early 19th-century Stockholm craftsmanship. The painted surface retains a soft, sophisticated patina that beautifully highlights the crisp carving and architectural proportions characteristic of Ståhl’s workshop.

The present lot closely follows the designs of sofas, chairs, and settees produced by Ephraim Ståhl (1768–1820), Master of the Stockholm Furniture Makers’ Guild. Ståhl supplied important commissions to the Swedish royal court under Kings Gustav IV Adolf, Karl XIII, and Karl XIV Johan, with comparable pieces still gracing the Royal Palace in Stockholm and the royal castles of Gripsholm, Tullgarn, and Rosersberg.

This exceptional sofa captures the pure neoclassical spirit of the Swedish Empire period at its most refined and sculptural. With its commanding griffin arms, graceful turned legs, and aristocratic scale, it brings instant grandeur, historical importance, and timeless elegance to any interior.

Ideal as a centrepiece in a formal drawing room, salon, library, or hallway, this sofa will anchor a room with sophistication and presence.

Perfect for the discerning collector or interior designer seeking authentic early 19th-century Swedish neoclassical furniture of the highest calibre.
