A superb and elegant pair of Louis XV grey and red-painted marquises by the celebrated Parisian menuisier Mathieu Bauve. Each chair features a shaped back, padded armrests and seat close-nailed and upholstered in blue and white silk with matching seat cushions. The frames are beautifully carved with shell motifs to the cabriole legs, which terminate in elegant scroll feet.
Mathieu Bauve, received as maître in 1754, was an innovator in furniture design and one of the most respected makers of his age. These refined marquises form part of a larger suite (a related canapé bears the stamp ‘BAUVE’), showcasing the graceful rococo spirit and superb craftsmanship of mid-18th-century Paris at its finest.
