E. Bailleul – Academic Pencil Drawing after the Discobolus of Myron, 1888
Item Description & Information
A large and accomplished late 19th-century pencil drawing by E. Bailleul, (circa: 1880), after or inspired by the celebrated ancient Greek statue Discobolus (Discus Thrower) by Myron (c. 460–450 BC).
The drawing captures the iconic athletic figure in dynamic contrapposto, with powerfully rendered musculature, twisted torso, and the dramatic turning movement of the head and raised arm as the athlete prepares to throw the discus. Executed with precise tonal modelling and strong chiaroscuro, it exemplifies the rigorous academic training of the French Beaux-Arts system.
Signed “E. Bailleul 1888” lower right and bearing the official stamp of the École des Beaux-Arts, Boulogne-sur-Mer upper left.
