After Francis Wheatley R.A. – The Cries of London, Ten Hand-Coloured Engravings, 19th-century
Item Description & Information
A charming and decorative set of ten 19th-century engravings from the celebrated series The Cries of London, after the original oil paintings by Francis Wheatley R.A. (1747–1801).
These delightful plates depict the street vendors and hawkers of late 18th-century London with warmth, character, and lively detail. Subjects include the famous Primrose Seller, Milk Maids, Orange Girl, Strawberry Seller, Old Chairs to Mend, Gingerbread Seller, and other iconic “cries” of Georgian London.
Masterfully executed in the delicate stipple engraving technique and beautifully hand-coloured by some of the finest engravers of the period: Giovanni Vendramini, Luigi Schiavonetti, Thomas Gaugain, and Antoine Cardon.
Condition:
- Colouring: The hand-colouring remains reasonably vibrant and attractive on all visible examples. Colours have not faded dramatically, though some plates show slight mellowing/toning typical of hand-coloured prints from this era.
- Paper: Light overall toning (browning) is visible, especially around the margins. This is normal for 19th-century paper.
- Foxing & Staining: Minor scattered foxing and occasional small spots are present (common in this series).
Measurements: 37 cm (H); 29 cm (W).
