Victorian Salt-Glazed "Faux Bois" Urn by Hexter Humpherson & Co., Newton Abbot
Item Description & Information
A magnificent example of English garden pottery, this large twin-handled urn is by the respected Devon firm Hexter Humpherson & Co. of Newton Abbot. Produced in the late Victorian to Edwardian period, it showcases the robust charm and durability that made their salt-glazed faux bois stoneware so popular for both garden and conservatory use.
Unusually modelled to resemble a section of tree trunk, the urn is of classic Campana form. The body is heavily textured with vertical bark-like striations, natural knot holes, and a wonderfully rustic, organic surface that captures the realistic appearance of weathered wood. The everted rim features a textured, rustic finish, while the underside of the bowl is attractively lobed. Two substantial, ribbed loop handles are positioned on either side for easy handling and balanced aesthetics.
The entire piece is covered in a distinctive salt-glaze — a rich, speckled brown with golden-brown highlights that catch the light beautifully, giving it an aged, earthy character typical of high-fired stoneware. The interior is also fully glazed, making it suitable for planting.
Impressed "H" in a square and the oval stamp "HEXTER HUMPHRESON & CO NEWTON ABBOT/THE POTTERIES".
Measurements: 66 cm (H); 56 cm (D).
