Minton Majolica Green Glazed Ceramic Planter
Item Description & Information
A superb example of late Victorian Mintons majolica, this striking planter is modelled as a woven wicker basket complete with a dramatic, oversized bow tied around its mid-section. The entire body is covered in a rich, lustrous emerald-green glaze that catches the light beautifully, displaying the characteristic high-gloss finish typical of Mintons’ majolica production.
The piece features finely moulded basket-weave detailing throughout, with every strand and intersection crisply defined to create a wonderfully tactile, realistic wicker effect. Encircling the top rim is a raised twisted-rope border, echoed by a similar rope-twist band at the base, giving the planter a neat, architectural finish. The interior is fully glazed in the same vibrant green, making it practical as well as decorative.
The centrepiece is the large, three-dimensional bow in high relief — its ribbons and knot are wonderfully sculptural, with soft folds and realistic creases that demonstrate the exceptional quality of Mintons’ moulding at this period.
Perfect as a cachepot for indoor plants, a striking desk tidy, or simply as a stand-alone decorative object, this charming Mintons piece embodies the playful naturalism and bold colour that made majolica so popular in late 19th/early 20th-century England. In excellent condition with no chips, cracks or restoration — the glaze remains bright and the moulding sharp.
Impressed: MINTONS 2721 on the underside.
Measurements: 36 cm (D); 32 cm (H).
