Antique Minton Ironstone Footbath
Item Description & Information
Rare early 19th-century Minton ironstone footbath in "Amherst Japan" pattern, circa 1830–1840. A striking and substantial oval (ovoid) footbath crafted in durable ironstone china (also termed stone china) by Minton during the Minton & Boyle partnership era, when the factory excelled in vibrant Imari-inspired chinoiserie designs for the export and domestic markets.
The form is elegantly proportioned with a wide everted rim for practicality, flanked by a pair of molded twin loop handles for easy carrying. The exterior and interior are richly printed and painted in the classic "Amherst Japan" chinoiserie palette: a central pagoda set within a fenced garden landscape, encircled by abundant flowering shrubs, peonies, chrysanthemums, foliage, and scrolling motifs in underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze iron-red, emerald green, orange, and gilt highlights—creating a bold, opulent effect typical of the period's "Japan" patterns.
Underside bears impressed (partly indistinct) marks alongside printed factory designations (likely including "STONE CHINA" banner or similar early Minton marks.
This piece exemplifies Minton's mastery of ironstone as a robust yet decorative alternative to fragile porcelain, popular in Victorian households for bedroom ablutions and later repurposed as elegant jardinières or planters. The pattern's vivid enamels and intricate scenes reflect the era's fascination with Orientalism following British diplomatic missions to Asia.
Measurements: 48 cm (W).
